About the story
What’s with this “Wren” thing?
The oldest extant version of the fable we are presenting here appeared in 1913 in the first volume of a two-volume anthology of Low Saxon folktales (Plattdeutsche Volksmärchen “Low German Folktales”) collected by Wilhelm Wisser (1843–1935). Read more ...

« Quid accidit ? Quis, puerī, uōbīs nocuit ? Exterritī uidēminī. »

« Sed, pater, longurio hīc uēnit, quī ferissimus immānisque uidēbātur ! Nīdum magnīs oculīs intrōspexit. Nōs profectō exterruit ! »

« Quid sit intelligō, » ait pater, « Quō abiit ? »

« Illāc profectus est, » respondērunt puerī.

« Mē exspectāte ! »inquit pater, « Eum appetītum eō. Nē hoc , puerī, cūraueritis, Eum tenēbō. » Quō factō, ad eum ēuolat.

In primō uiæ flexū, in leōnem incidit quī itēr facit.

Trochilus uērō nōn timet. In leōnis tergō consīdit eumque increpat. « Quid domum uenīs, inquit, et puerōs terrēs ? »

Hoc non cūrat leo et īre pergit.

Tum fortis auiculus etiam grauius eum reprehendit. « Nihil est quod illīc, inquam, faciās ! Et si forte redieris, » ait, « tunc uidēbis ! Hoc facere haud iuuat, » dicit dum pediculum tollit, « sed tibi lumbum subitō pediculō frangam ! »

Quō factō, in nīdum redit.

« Bene habet, » inquit liberīs, « Eum tam ācriter obiurgāui ut non breuī iterum uīdēāmus. »
